Traveling with Type 1 Diabetes takes a little more planning, but with the right gear and mindset, your adventures can be every bit as spontaneous, exciting, and memorable as anyone else's.

Whether you're flying to a new country or taking a road-trip these 10 travel essentials will help you stay safe, stress-free, and ready for anything.

10 Essentials for Traveling with T1D

1. Waterproof Case for Devices & Supplies

Protect your insulin pump, Dexcom receiver, or insulin pens from rain, ocean spray, and pool splashes. A durable waterproof pouch can be a game-changer on beach days or boat trips.

2. Compact, Organized Travel Bag

Keep everything in one place: glucometer, insulin, infusion sets, snacks, and backup pens without it becoming a jumbled mess. Look for bags with multiple compartments and insulation.

3. Portable Chargers

You can’t risk a dead phone when you're relying on it for Dexcom readings or pump control. Bring a power bank with you on travel days (and don't forget charging cables!).

4. Extra Adhesive Tapes & Patches

Humidity, sweat, and long travel days can make CGM sensors peel early. Pack extra adhesive patches to keep your sensors and infusion sites secure.

5. Printed Medical Documents & Backup Prescriptions

Have physical copies of your prescription, doctor’s note, and a list of your medication. If your supplies get lost or stolen, this paperwork can help you get replacements faster.

6. Glucose Tabs + Easy Carbs (in Every Bag)

You never want to be stuck mid-hike or during a flight without fast-acting carbs. Toss a few glucose tabs or fruit snacks into every backpack, purse, and carry-on.

7. Reusable Cold Pack or Frio Insulin Cooler

Say goodbye to ice packs! The FRIO wallet keeps your insulin cool without refrigeration. Just soak it in water for 10–15 minutes and enjoy stress-free cooling for 2–4 days. Need to re-activate it? Just soak again!

8. Pump & CGM Backup Supplies

Always overpack when it comes to diabetes supplies. Bring at least double what you think you need: infusion sets, sensors, batteries, etc. Especially important if you’re traveling abroad!

9. TSA Notification Card + Travel Letter

To avoid hassles at airport security, carry a TSA Medical Notification Card and a doctor’s letter explaining your diabetes tech. Pro tip: never check diabetes supplies in luggage!

10. Emergency ID & Contact Info

Wear a medical ID bracelet and carry a card with emergency contact numbers and a brief T1D explanation in the local language (if traveling internationally).
